feller-me-lad, young

feller-me-lad, young
Eric Partridge, in his Dictionary of Historical Slang, tells us that this expression has been in use in Britain since the mid-nineteenth century. It can still occasionally be heard, used in a slightly ponderous way by middle-aged men to younger men or boys. It is meant to be jocular. A father uses it to his prospective son-in-law in Theirs was the Kingdom, by R.F.Delderfield. In A Kind of Loving, by Stan Barstow, a father says to his son, who is aged twenty: ‘I asked you a civil question, young feller-me-lad.’ This is when the son concerned has replied with great sarcasm to a friendly question about football. Exactly when the two separate vocatives, ‘young fellow’ and ‘my lad’, became fused into the single expression is not known.
